Neonatology

We met with The Fetal Center almost 2 weeks ago now and had another ultrasound, as well as met with some of the Neonatology team.

The ultrasound went well. Nothing new discovered, but we learned that where Crew stands now is that his entire liver and gallbladder are still in his omphalocele, but only a small bit of his small intestine. Looks like some of his intestines may have moved back into his abdomen, but we really aren't sure on that.

We also learned that the opening to his O is quite large - 3.5cm wide by 2.5cm tall - which is basically his entire stomach. This could mean that closure will be interesting, since his stomach muscles and skin will be so far apart. Also, a portion of his umbilical cord is rather large (wide) because there appears to be excess Wharton's jelly around it. There is also some excess fluid in his abdomen, but they aren't too concerned about that as some of his organs aren't in that space! They'll keep watching all of those things closely to see how they change... 

This is one of the latest ultrasound pics. You can see his O with his liver (the light gray) and then a bunch of extra fluid in his O as well (the black within the white line). Between the O and his face is a portion of the umbilical cord.

Next we met with Neonatology. In a non-Covid-19 world we'd have been allowed to tour the NICUs, but that couldn't happen because of how high the case counts and spread is right now.

They told us that we should expect at least a 4 week stay, went through how they will start his care, and some of what to expect when he comes to join us. Also because of Covid (unless things get much better in the next 2 months) we both are not allowed in the NICU at the same time with him. We have to rotate out of the room. We are the only ones allowed as well, no visitors at all. Thanks Covid!

In a few weeks Lindsay will start on at least once a week nonstress tests - possibly more based on growth and future appointments.
